AVIONICS SIZE LCD GLASS

A new generation of avionics LCD glass has been developed using the LCD process. New COTS industrial grade AMLCDs have been resized for standard avionics boxes. They all have a corresponding small footprint, wide viewing angle, and high resolution making them suitable for aircraft and simulator applications.

TED, Orange, CA, has been resizing AMLCD prototypes for five years. TED, a wholly owned company of Tannas Electronics, is now actively marketing the licensing of the technology and selling prototypes to the industry at large. Custom sized LCDs never considered possible before will be demonstrated at their SID ‘04 Symposium booth #143 in Seattle, May 24, 25 & 26. Symbolic Displays, Inc. (SDI), a TED Licensee, is sharing the TED booth and exhibiting avionics boxes with resized AMLCDs and offering resized displays to the industry at large.

The technology consists of taking a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) LCD and physically cutting it to a new size and resealing it with little or no change in its original performance. The LCD process opens up an unlimited source of custom sizes for avionics, vehicles and industry at a fraction of the cost and lead time of custom-made displays. The resized LCDs are being used to replace EL, PDP and CRT displays that are no longer available or are price-prohibitive.

Lawrence E. Tannas, Jr., President, says, “The cost of making a custom resized LCD by my patented method is very low and there is no NRE and no minimum order.” Tannas goes on to say that the process is easily implemented and that a low-cost, “turn-key” tool set is now available to a Licensee for resizing display glass. A demonstration of the resizing process can be arranged for a potential Licensee. Further details can be seen at www.tannas.com. ###
